Not M Frame related but sort of fits into box confusion. This was posted on Instagram.



It's a Gen 1 frog (ended in 1990) with a gen 2 box (1994). The previous photo had the sticker somewhat blurred out, but this shot shows it better. Seems it's the ancestor of the DE line of what would become Vault exclusives. Interesting to see them date back that far.

makes sense, very interesting indeed, i can definitely see the same happening with Gen 1 M Frames, probably even non-DE stuff.

Did they make a Gen II M frame in Matte Clear? I personally dont ever remember seeing one and I couldnt find one in the database.

Don't recall much in matte clear/crystal until the Jacket era.

OK, there was one on Ebay and I engaged the seller and he swore up and down he got it from Oakley. I told him I thought he was mistaken and he didnt take it very well.

There was one time I was talking to someone with a pink splatter M Frame, I was trying to help them out giving them the history, he thought for sure he had it in the mid-80s, told him the mumbo didn't come out until 1989 and splatter M frame was early 90s, he thought there was no way on earth that could be true, haha. I stopped after that since I didn't want to hammer the point that his memory is wrong, haha.

VERY new to the discussion here, I mainly stop by for information and research. Dan, props to you for starting such a great page, this page was around when I last checked in 2008 and its alive and kicking still today. Oakley has a cult following, I'm on board with it now :-)

Question is.....what do I have here, a confirmation would be great.

I believe I'm dealing with a Gen 1 Gold Mine and a Gen 2 Cobalt, any help would be nice.

(seems I've yet to figure out how to post pics, do you guys have these two frames available to post pics on....Black Rain and Cobalt specifically?).

I'll work on getting some pics added, seems I might need a host site for the pictures (no attaching from desktop).

Oakley M Frame obviously, newer style (non Pro style, the arms fold)

Is this officially a "White Camo" M Frame or is there another official color in the world of Oakley.

I had 4 of these and have now sold all but one, I can't really say they are rare because of their age, but I rarely (ok...never) see any for sale except the few I've sold.

Yes, that is officially 'White Camo'. Sometimes you see Snow Camo, but that was more for the SI Boots. Although the White Camo on the boots was completely different, and more like the Snow Jungle of the older models. I agree that I wouldn't call it rare, it's just an older color of this model, and the interesting frames tend to not get shuffled around the market since people like to keep them.

Pretty sure you got all the vintage M Frames right. On the Gen 2 Black, that's a Hybrid. V is a like a smaller Sweep. For color, it looks like Grey, which was typically more common than Black. The Gold Mine is dark, but most likely that colorway.

I agree with Dann, I think you got it all correct.

Wasn't someone asking about a Green frame. I believe this is from a Japanese brochure circa late 1991/early 1992 (based on some clues, but nothing confirmed)


And interesting that Red Iridium and Orange Mirror co-existed, yet still distinct on the Blade System vs M Frame.

There's a green one at Oakley HQ as well. For sure it was at least prototyped, but that Japanese brochure is the first thing that makes me think it was maybe sold to the public for a bit at least overseas. Sweet brochure finds!

Thanks to rhlake for the copies. And thanks to my job for their super expensive scan to PDF machine. I'll have some full copies available once I track down the dates a little closer.

Looks like I now need a green Gen 1 in addition to a white Mumbo to complete the collection.
