Can't think of any. They combine the sharpness of the hard steel with the flexibility of the soft steel. The price, that is a drawback... ;)

Dann, I think this statement says it all about damascus. Price is the big downfall, and maybe doesn't have as much rust resistance because of the carbon steel. Some patterns can be quite intricate and can cost quite a bit.

A coworker just got a Microtech Troodon and was showing me the other day. I'd actually never heard of them but have found some solid reviews, good to hear that you guys like them too since I already know we share similar tastes.

As far as OTF (out the front) autos go, Microtech is the undisputed king. The older stuff is naturally the more sought after stuff, as with anything, but of course with it comes a big price tag.

Here's a couple of custom Troodons. Damascus and microholics exclusive. Both hand ground blades. I don't have the Damascus anymore. :(

To all benchmade automatic owners; a question. I just picked up a benchmade Infidel. Its a beautiful knife, but is misfiring a lot. I read online that to get it tuned up you need to sign off on something. So whats the deal with sending it in for replacement parts? Do you actually have to prove that you are in the military/federal govt/ coast guard? Or is that thing you have to sign just to get rid of benchmade's liabilities?

Ooo, I like the looks of those. Wish I were home to cook more though. Most of my kitchenware lies unused.

Very nice knives, Tim.

I gotta invest in some quality kitchen knives one of these days. I had looked at Shun or Global sets but haven't pulled the trigger.

Thanks Oak!
Globals for me were terrible to use as you get calluses on your hand after using only for a short while, yes they are quite sharp but are just in a different league to Miyabi. Shun are a good buy and will last long and keep a good edge. But as before just don't have the edge of the Miyabi 5000MCB's.
IMO Miyabi are like Oakley lenses, the best! Shun are like Ray-bans. Close but no cigar!
Check out some YouTube vids on miyabis, it will blow you away, not to mention the absolute beauty they carry but just how god damn sharp they are! I shit myself every time I use them and I've been chopping onions etc for nearly 20 years professionally! But at the end of the day it's how you feel using a good knife. Each to their own brother!

I'll check out Miyabi in more detail the next chance I get. There is no mistaking their level of detail.

If I am not mistaken, Shun uses the sg2 steel in their top knives. That will make the edge as good, and as usual it is all about how you treat it.
