I'm agreeing with most of you. I've plunked down quite more than I should to get the last three print frames, and now here's another that seems even worse to try and find. My wallet can't keep up. $650 for three frames, is just impossible.

Yeah and with two more domestic releases slotted for the next two months, my freakin head is spinning!!! It makes me gunshy to spend a dime on anything else. I just have to keep saving for the next big release.

I do hope the 500 number is acurate regardless of price (sounds high though). That means whoever is willing to spend the loot, will probably get one.

It's exhausting to just think about trying to get one of these, it's nice, but it's near impossible to obtain again.

To the discussion about the number which will be released,
I think it's a German release only again, like in October last year. These glasses are only made for store opening and why they need to produce 10000000000 pairs of them?, it's a hard getting piece and not cheap! They produce a rare piece for the oakley fans here in Germany, I even have to go more in detail, in BERLIN. Due to even the customer service of oakley is not informed about, so they will only be sold at this opening, I think. Today it's not sure if they go to other stores or other countries. But if yes, than the price is such high like now.

I don't know if I told you the message I want to, sry for my bad English.

and yes, Iam going to Berlin.

Well sure....but who is going to cough up $540.00 for a pair of O Matter?

If this is the new wave - I can seriously have my own customized professionally for a hell of a lot less....

What the hell is Jim thinking on this? I don't understand the logic....

The way I see it, there has always been limited editions for Oakley, before they were not availlable (athletes customs, special events) now they are.

With the o-review and the many connections people have here, it has been somewhat easy to find those rare gems.

But for the c100, 500 is still more then the London Gascan for exemple, its just that this time it has some nice artwork instead of an exclusive lens and sig.

And since we are a site about Oakley fans and a lot of collectors its frustrating to some but I think its fair game in the end. Its not like its gonna be like that all the time.

Just my 0.2 cents.

i kinda see both sides of it. if they do a limited run of say 5000 and only sell 600, they've wasted a lot of money, granted they probably only cost a buck to make, but it's all part of marketing strategy, don't forget, they are a business.it's better to make less and sell out than to be stuck with surplus.

It would be nice though if someone got in touch with the o review and gave us a heads up or at least said, look, we got these coming out, who want's one, and offer a week deadline to say yes or no. one pair each only etc etc...

but then there are people who collect other stuff and are totally ignorant to the fact that there are oakley collectors out there.

some guys will be collecting stuff purely in connection with Berlin as a place, others limited edition sunglasses, oakley or not, others will be going for c100 artwork, and of course there will be vultures buying them just to make money on ebay.

i'd love to have them, but as with the df's i'm not paying 500 dollars for plastic sunglasses. i've seen +ve red xx x metals on ebay, but i struggle with justifying paying that for those too.

supply and demand huh?

it's only worth something to those who want it bad enough.

I am so glad the regular Gascans are too big for my head..or nose or something like that...I remain a wearer not a collector anyway..yet I do find myself being selective when and where Ill wear hard to replace items These do look kind of cool but I tend to like simpler and solid colored glasses anyway...I mean here in Hartford area I have only seen one pair of Gascans -on someone at the mall..its still the wraps(XX,etc) and metals(juliets) that I see people wearing I am sure CA and other areas are completely more up to date..even in NYC unless I am at the O store I havent seen a lot of variation

I'm with Eric and think its pretty cool Oakley is willing to do this kind of thing for store openings.

On one hand it sucks if you want one and have no way to get to the store opening. On the other hand if you're one of the people lucky enough to be there and get one it makes it all the more special.

I hope they continue to do this and open as many 0 Stores as they can in as many cities as they can.

IMHO, a limited edition run of 500 items such as the DF gascans or this case C100 is not just a pair of plastic glasses they hand out at openings, these are in fact limited edition pieces of art, hence using artists to create these.

We, the people that frequent this forum are in part to blame for the limited edition craziness. Surely has we all know, many a Oakley employee visits this forum and all they have to do is some light reading and they quickly find out how we covet serial numbers and low editions. We were all stoked when we first heard the news about these types of limited editions and the people that were behind them.

Again, its all about supply and demand, and has for the high prices of the few found on ebay, no one is holding a gun to the head of the buyers, its simple if you want it bad enough and the buyer can justify the price so be it. If the seller has 99 pairs of 100 limited editions widgets and he is holding all of those hostage on ebay well that a different story. But if the seller has one of two and is looking to make a buck, well this is what most of this worlds commerce system is built on, sorry to say.

We really don't see too many people complain about the custom glasses our two favorite vendors sell on ebay but lets be honest, just because "Bob" can get purple ultra violet lens and put them in a stock frame, does that justify someone giving him $250+ for those, not really, but we do it all day and it still goes on and theses editions are more a one of creation more than an artistic rendering of a gascan in a limited edition run. If we could go buy those lens "Bob" will soon be out of business.

IE: Buy any concert tickets in the U.S. lately? Has soon has the tickets go on sale 2nd party scalpers buy up all of the good ones leaving nose bleed and the like for the rest of us poor s.o.b's. So, in order to get decent tickets you either have to pay secondary prices or get crappy or no seats.

Any time limited editions are made this is what happens...supply and demand.

When is the Berlin store opening and what is the drill for getting one of these things? Is it like an invite only party or can anyone show up, plonk a fistful of crisp Euro notes down on the counter proclaiming "Good man, I'll like one of your very finest C100 Gascans, if you don't mind, thank you very much"?

Pulp Fiction, hahahahaha. Nice one

As for the limited-ness of all these artist renditions....

I'm pretty upset with Oakley about it, but even more so from a rational point of view. Oakley is in it to make money...so why not make enough to make some real money on them? Selling 5000 at $140 is most likely better for them financially than selling 500 at $300 or whatever the PP is going to be. As a matter of fact, they may even not sell all of their 500 pairs because of the PP being so high.

Also, why not make them available on their website? They make so much more profit on items by selling them through their website since there is no middle-man, and they get full mark-up benefits.

ALSO, this would avoid scalpers charging people too much. If the item is readily available, then there is no need to pay that premium price for them

On another note, if Oakley's concern would be over-production, then why not make a batch now, sell them, and then if they are all sold out, make another batch. It is a simple idea, and most likely a profitable one.

Finally, I'm just curious as to what their profit margin is on these babies. I can't see it costing Oakley $299 of the $300 or whatever the selling price is to make them. Also, I doubt that there are 500 Berlin-specfic Germans that are die-hard enough to drop $540 for a pair of o-matter sunglasses...so they are obviously trying to reach other people, but by making them so hard to get, they are working against that.

I'm all for the market deciding prices, but I don't want to see it at the expense of speculators and scalpers ruining the fun for everyone. Scalpers and speculators all but ruined the comic book industry, and I don't want to see it ruin Oakley collecting as well. Speculators selling to other speculators who, in turn, drive the prices so high that the true collectors will never get them and just stop caring and leave.

IMO, the way collecting survives is to get the collectibles into the hands of those who can actually appreciate them....the collectors. As I look on eBay and view some of the prices of Supreme Frogskins listed, I can see it's not exactly collectors who've listed them. I saw the same thing with the 2nd Flores GC. Oh gee, I can't wait to see it with the C100 GC.
