Hi,

This is juste an idea , but I tought that instead of the world map this would be cool to locate us on a google map API.
I know that this must be a lot of work to set it up on the website.

Do you have any links. I'm not good with API's. Actually I don't know anything about API's, but perhaps I should learn.

Well, I think the most general info page could be this one :
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/

And maybe this one sum up the way to use this API quite well

I'll take a look thanks. I might need to research it anyway, since the job I'm finishing will continue later and they want to do some location based information for schools.

Doesn't look too bad. Got this up off the fly. Seems I have have people enter in towns and if will return the long/lat of the location. I can then enter that into the database and use it to build markers with names and stuff. Thanks for the suggestion!

It's not too bad, they provided enough code to get a map to display. The only thing I did so far was reset the center of the map to Kansas, and add one marker for Rhode Island. I'll take a look at the functions they provide and see what I can implement.

okay, here's what's done so far. I've created a latitude and longitude field in the members table. It's set to 0,0 fr everyone now. But going to the map page, you can search for a location and it will pop up on the map. A box will prompt you to see if you want to add this as your location. Clicking on the link adds the coords into your user profile. The maps then goes out and grabs an XML file that collects all coords that aren't 0 and builds a list which is then displayed permanently on the map.

You change your location by searching for a new address and resubmitting. There is no way to remove a location yet.

Location search is open-ended, so you can put in just a state, a city, state (recommended) or an address (not recommended for privacy's sake).

The lat/long can't be filled in in 'My Info', only from the map. Will prevent people from putting stuff in the ocean again, since that was of course hilarious all 500 times it was done. Once I finish this, I should be able to clean up that if it happenes, or at least make people accountable for where they place their marker.

What happens. Type an address into the text box at the bottom and press the button. Then when the marker pops up click the link to add it.

I must be dumber than I thought. I went to the map and couldn't figure out what to do next. I clicked on Tokyo and nothing magic happened.

Should we see on the map the markers of other members ?
Because it seems that some members already placed themselves (including me), but I can't see any markers on the map.

I tried with Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer, same result.

Note with no relationship with this thread: I don't have the header of O-review with Mozilla Firefox. é_è.

Yeah, the header on Firefox doesn't show up, I don't know why.

FF might have some issues with Javascript and XML.

That's Ok at work, I must have some issues on my personnal computer. I'll try again next week.

For the ones who have some problems or who don't know if they have the good result, the World Map should look like this.

Must be an issue with the XML parsing. I'll do some research tomorrow and see if it's a common problem.
