Lens: Ice Iridium

My favorite pair of glasses ever! Had to really track these down when I got them. It was right after they had been discontinued and was lucky enough to be working at Sunglass Hut when someone returned a pair and I quickly bought them up before someone else could! I just wish I could find more!!! I want them in every frame and lens! I love them THAT much!

When I first saw them,I got really impressed with these.I can say (can't help doing so),that they are the best way to close a historic era for oakley.Just think which great models did we enjoy from 98 'till 2004:the minute, the straight jacket, valves, plate, most of the x metals. And now these...They are definitely the perfect pinnacle of the so called (by oakley themselves)"organic design" of sunglasses.
What are they? The implementation of the oakley organic muscular design,on the maximum degree I think.A flowing, smooth curve, with endlees detail, and full of personality.Starting from their own appearance, they have a deply loustrous highly polished finish,as if there was some kind of lacquer on the aluminum.I mean, the wires don't have that, the x metals don't have that. It's the hatchet that I see this kind of gloss for the first time. And I can ensure you that no matter how rigid and strong the aluminum is,it appears as smooth and soft as you can imagine. This effect is specially present on the carbon finish, but having seen the mercury as well,I certainly confirm it on the other models too.The orbitals, aggressive, round on the eye brows, and with sharp edges everywhere else. The earstems, thick and thin at the same time, with the oakley registered fin always present close to the temples. While the whole outcome, resembles both unknown and the splice,it has a personality all its own,due to the very light and thinner than both of the aforementioned, frame, which with the exception of the earstems is closer to the x metals,if not even the wires,in terms of thickness.Unobtainium is placed both on the nosepiece and on the earstems, with the latter ones, being wider and longer compared to all the designs that I can think of right now.And the two hinges do a great job in holding the glasses tight on the head.My only objection would be on that, the fact that the frame is one piece, stiff but light because of the aluminum, and unfortunately without flex couplers. In general I'm not in favor of this idea, which I see that is applied to many other pairs as well, just like the half x.They are somewhat thin and light. But they are still not wires. So,I would expect some more flexibility.Since I read a lot of complaints over here about the plastic hinges' longevity,I say that we should all consider that all of the o-matter pairs' dual cam hinges are probably made from the same material as those. And I believe that there haven't been any complaints up to now in regard with the o-matter hinges' quality. So I think that nobody should worry on that.By the way,the hatchets' hinges are identical to those of the mag switch.
Taking under considaration all of the above, and combining them with seven highly attactive frame/lens combinations, oakley sure achieved making a pair that is gonna be remembered as a milestone to the likes of their highly praised series. They showed once more, that they can introduce something really different any time they want.Because, the hatchet is in terms of design, and material, definitely something different.

since a lot of people are wearing juliets, i've decided to get myself a pair of hatchets, since i like to be unique and be different. these are not too common since its a discontinued model so i got it from ebay. the moment i hold the hatchet in my hands, i noticed how tough and sturdy it is. very lightweight and good for driving since it effectively blocks direct sunlight. i do not recommend this sunglasses for people with large heads/face since the frame is small, but overall, its a good alternative to the juliets if you want to stand out from the crowd

These are super! I have no troubles with the fitting on my medium to large face. The Titanium Iridium is a really wonderful lens. It works on an overcast days and on the sunny! Making this one of Oakleys greatest lenses! Every serious Oakley fan must have this lens! It also Has lovely silver mirror on outside and Titanium laser etched on bottom left lens. (I love how Oakley do this)! Titanium Iridium lenses also have a brown base for increased contrast thats perfect! Now to the hatchet model. By far the Hatchet is my favourite even over the X-Metals! O-Luminum is amazing stuff it is actually a spaceage alloy metal invented by Oakley that is ultra light! This Hatchet brown frame with titanium lenses looks great and so so cool and also now very rare! I will be sticking to these like super glue!

These and the Hatchet Ducati are basically the same as they are same colourway of Carbon Black. Only these have Polarized Lenses while the Ducati's don't. And of course these don't have the red icon and ear stems. Both these and the Ducati Hatchet are my favourite in the Hatchet colourways. The silverish carbon frame somehow suits me the best. And these being Polarized is a great +! Also these frames look so very cool as do the Ducati Hatchets. Like one other reviewer said they are better than the X-Metals! And yes I'd agree.

Frame: Carbon Ducati
Lens: Black Iridium

This would have be without any doubt whatsoever my favourite oakley ever even over the X-Metals! Why you may ask? The answer is the incredible quality and craftmansship to these but only in this special Hatchet Ducati! Even the X-Metals don't look as 3 dimensional or modern as these do! The frame teases your eye as first being dark but then goes to a georgeous sliverish color in the sun but that looks superb! The red Icon on side and the red rubber ears look a million bucks! The frame shape looks a spectacular almost 3 dimensional diamondish shape! Amazingly cool pair of shades and really suits my face. It is aggresive but not too aggresive ,just perfecto! Of all the Ducati signature models this one tops them all because it has a spaceage and light O- Luminum metal frame and of couse looks super super cool!

I am truly disappointed with this model. They look absolutely amazing in pictures, so I ordered a pair on eBay. The first pair arrived with the spring hinge broken. After receiving a new pair, I realized that you have to have a seriously small head to make these work. The frame wraps completely to the sides of the head before the ear stems begin, and the stems don't even flex much. The have a very tight fit. The lenses are placed very close together and look very goofy on me. I wish I had a chance to try these on before I bought them, but I wasn't even aware of their release until after they were discontinued.

Lens: Vr28 Black Iridium

I love these for ever and they have been my oakley sunglasses for over a year now and are the only oakleys I like! They so much suit my face and even my Mom says so! Mom and I reckon the hatchets have a nick of increasing (for the person who wears them) their looks! I have tried the X-Metals and they are good looking too, however they feel heavy and give me hell after an hour of wearing! I feel that the O-luminum is what oakley should of used in the X-Metals so they are lighter and more comfortable. If oakley could of added a grey x-metal coloring to the O-luminum material all the X-metals would of been perfect. The only reason I don't wear X-Metals is they are too damn uncomfortable! The Hatchet is never a problem all day long. This lens (the vr28 black irdium) is great, I could say it is the only oakley lens thats suits me! (as it has perfect contrast for overcast and is wearable in the blazing sun no problems too!). The raw with vr28 hatchet are very cool looking and that shinny frame speaks loud! I think they are very dressy and I also think they look good both in the sports and for going out (formal). With the ultra light o-luminum frame they are very light and comfortable on. Just a stunning model and I think the best in the hatchet range. The raw with vr28 are just damn too cool! The hatchet is no longer made so guys get this classic oakley (o-luminum) while you can!

Frame: Mercury/Raw/Pewter
Lens: Ti Clear/Ice Iridium/Black Iridium

I still love these glasses, they are the frame I end up wearing most of the time. So, my previous comments stand, but I just got 3 new colorways.

The pewter is an absolutely beautiful finish, a really rich metallic grey. It looks incredible in the sun! Love the frame color, I might swap my titanium lenses in to give some contrast to the dark grey and accent the silver icon.

One thing that surprised me was the frames on the Ice model have a different raw finish than on the VR28. It is a bead blasted finish, the VR28's have a tumbled finish. It's a totally different look, but nice either way. This is my first pair of Ice lenses, very cool looking to look at, nothing special to look through (other than typical oakley clarity).

What can I say about Ti clear except they look awesome, but not a "sun" lens, hence the "clear" in the title. Great for indoor or dark cloudy seattle days.

Frame: Carbon
Lens: Black Iridium (Ducati)
I finally was able to pick up a pair of these somewhere, for a really good price. Considering that these are limited edition, I'm really happy that I only paid $75 for mine off of eBay. I could not be any happier, though I was slightly disappointed that the cool looking red- tagged microfiber case was not included. The O-luminum, is surprisingly light- weight, though it is heavier than my half jackets.

Arms: The long rubbers on the arms provide very good grip, and I do not have any problem with the hinges, they are just the right stiffness and lock into place when fully extended. The only problem with the arms is that ehrn you close them the tip of the arm scratches up against the inside of the other, wearing it down slightly after time.

Frame: The Carbon colored frame definitely completes the look of these sunglasses, and they are not to light to the point of feeling like cheap shades.

Lenses: The Black Iridium, though standard is very good. These are the first pair of Oakleys that I have bought with Black Irid. lenses, and I am very happy I did.

Fit: These fit to a slightly larger head comparing to my Half Jackets, though I have a normal sized head, and they fit perfectly fine. If you own a pair of Half Jackets, and they are nice and snug, you should not have a problem. But, if there is an Oakley Vault anywhere near you, I would try them on first (I couldn't find Hatchets anywhere).

Overall: These are great looking shades, with a great feel to them. They are sure to catch attention, but maybe not as much as the Juliets ;)
ShadyOak -
Frame: Raw/Brown
Lens: VR28 Black Iridium/Titanium Iridium

The hatchet is my favorite frame I own so far (don't have a pair of juliets yet so...). They are really light yet strong, are aggressive in a classy kind of way, and provide great coverage. The only thing I would change is some different size nose bombs. Ultimately I would need a slimmer bomb to get the glasses a bit closer to my face. It's not bad enough to be annoying or look wierd though so I'm still sticking to 5 stars. Other than that they fit me perfectly. The spring hinges are almost as good as the ones on my mag four, but not quite.

The brown finish is a nice deep metalic rootbeer color, I like it. The raw is a cool matte silver finish that seems to be very durable because there's no paint to scratch.

Lenses are standard oakley fare, awesome. I may switch the lenses in these two just to see what happens.

I love these frames and hope to own all the colorways eventually. It's a shame that O-luminum isn't in the line up anymore, I'd love to see what else oakley could do with it.

Just got these pair of sunglasses and they look great and they are super-lightweight. Fits perfectly on my face and I don't even feel like they are on my face. I have long eyelashes for a guy and if i push the glasses snug to my face my lashes rub the lens. But that is not a big issue for me.

I know they are now discontinued but you can find them off EBay or other internet oulets for almost 1/2 the orig. price. I bought mine in Jamaica duty free for $150USD!!!! What a steal!!
Jonas -
Frame: The frame is one of the mosy beautifully-crafted that I have seen. Not too "blingy" like my Juliets and Romeos but not as bland as my A-Wires either. My Hatchet's frames are so solid that with a gentle squeeze, you wont hear anything not even a faint creak.

Lens: The lens are standard A-rated Oakley. I got the brown ones and they do an excellent job of reducing glare while maintaining my visual acuity. At first my eyeleshes were kinda touching the lens so I remedied this by adjusting the nosebombs. Oakley later told me that they can give higher nose bombs to incrase the distance between my eyes and the frames. I bought them for less than $150 online.

So far so good. The lens provide very good protection against glare. The fit of the frame is near-perfect, snug but not tight. They do not fall off when I play basketball. The construction is a masterpiece, simple and sporty yet understatedly elegant. It's cheaper than my Juliets but seem to be more durable and solid. Too bad Oakley is discontinuing it but they can be still found over the net at around $160 more or less.

They are for me on the same level than the X-metal line.

A bit small at first sight, the Hatchet proves to be very well accommodating to fit my big head thanks to the spring hinges.
The best part of these glasses is their light weight. I can wear them during hours like I have nothing on my head.

Concerning the design, they are very classy, with a little touch of aggressiveness. The brown color with its kind if varnished finishing looks marvelous and the Titanium Iridium matches the frame color perfectly.

The Orange/Brownish lens transmission is perfect for sunny to overcast light condition.

the combination of o-luminium and VR28 is a great one, the lightweight frame, with a shiny finish, looks rigid, and the VR28 lens makes it an easy to wear lens in all kinds of lightconditions. love em !

Another excellent pair of shades from Oakley's mad science division, the Hatchet Wires are lightweight, durable, and fit perfectly. The accent of red unobtainium earsocks compliments the red icons perfectly to finish this Ducati rendition. Even the box is a collector's piece, featuring photos from Ducati cycle racing. The only drawback to mention is the "spring hinges" which are actually made of plastic and therfore not as durable as they could have been had Oakley used metal instead.

Awesome glasses. Like the saying goes, they fit like a glove and have a style all their own. The O-Luminum frame is very lightweight and durable, and these lenses allow you to wear the glasses in overcast/lowlight conditions so your peepers will still be protected from harmful UV rays. The only drawback is that the spring hinges are made of plastic instead of metal, so they may not hold up over the years. Still, a great pair of shades. Get them while you can since they're discontinued.

Frame: take your pick
Lens: See above, but Ti is definitely my favorite.
<sigh> All the potential in the world, but never quite delivered. It's a gorgeous frame; IMHO, the perfect blend of OTT and conservative. If I have a complaint with the styling, it's that the wide arc of the earstems coupled with the narrow set of the orbitals make some people's eyes look close together.

The colorways that have been available are VERY well-balanced, considering that there have only been 5 US models. The Raw/VR28 Black should have been less exclusive (these are light enough to be an everyday sport model, and with the deep orbital are perfect for golf), and a second polarized color (Platinum/Gold Iridium?) would have made it a much faster seller. Also, it would have been nice to have Fire, Ruby, or 24k available to balance the Ice.

I was certain that the O-luminum line was the future of Oakley- all the sculpture of the X-metals, with none of the weight and (eventually) less heavy on the wallet- and that we'd see a couple of similar frames in different sizes. I even thought up names for the larger version (Tomahawk) and smaller (Handaxe).

Anyway, now they're discontinued, so smoke 'em while you got 'em.

I love the design of these frames. They look sculpturally aggressive and well made but they really are for smaller faces, not great big moon heads like me. I tried them on and they instantly took 50 points off my IQ. The do have a tendency to make those with less than ideal heads for this frame look cross-eyed. For this reason I'm not giving this frame 5 stars.
EastCoast -
Frame: Pewter
Lens: Black Iridium

I can't decide if these are a 3 or a 4. They are beautifully made and look excellent. The lens etching is a bonus. The spring hinges are different than other wires - they don't 'snap' the way others do. They are made from a different material than most wires (O-Luminum), and are quite light.

These seem to fit differently than most Oakleys though. The lenses can make your eyes look 'close together.' Also the lenses sit quite closely to the face. Definitely try these before you buy them.

Oh - the arms on mine don't quite line up at the hinge, and there seems to be minor distortion in the periphery. Not enough to turn me off (I'm nitpicking to the extreme perhaps); these are still my go-to pair on very sunny days. A bit disconcerting though.

I really love the shape of these lenses. These have a really subtle OTT shape going on with the hard angles. I love the red unobtanium too with the ducati edition. Just wish they fit a tad snugger because they tend to slide just a little bit because of the "loose" hinge.

Well I took me a while to commit to buying the Hatchet. Some felt to tight, so I was always unsure. I was told it looked to small on me....but in the end I just couldn't resist. The style and shape i feel are just so different and unique. After having my Chop Tops in Brown and the fact that they were the only ones with the Ti lens which I love so much I finally broke and bought them. At times the do look a little small on my head but a lot of that is because I'm used to seeing larger frames on my mug as have friends who have said the same. Look if you want a unique frame different to whats out there this is your choice. plus be so light for such a solid metal frame is a bonus as well.

Honestly, I don't know what the big deal about the Hatchets are. Granted, they are quite attractively designed and very light weight. But while a perfectly nice looking model, they don't stand out much in Oakley's lineup the way any X-metal or, even some of the wires do. Maybe the effusive compliments from O-Reviewers raised my expectations too much.

I wanted these for such a long time, and when they finally arrived here in Japan I was very disappointed. I thought I had a head that fit every Oakley, but these sat way too high on my nose and my wife said they made my eyes look too close together. Hearing other people saying they fit too big confuses me, because they look way too small on me. I even tried the Asian Fit Hatchets, they were a bit better, but they just don't have a good fit on me. The design and interesting frame colors make for a great looking pair of glasses, and I can see why pepole would buy them. But, they are overpriced in my book and I would suggest going with a Juliet way before hooking yourself up with one of these. I hope Oakley offers a similar model or a second version though because there's a lot of potential there. 3/5

i haven't actually gotten a hatchet yet, tried these on when i visited my fav local optic store. the first impression putting them on is they're simple designed but still stands out as an Oakley sunglass with the cool earstem shape. the raw/ice combo is pretty cool but a bit to flashy for my taste.., while the mercury/ti clear combo would make a perfect clubbing eyegear. the material O-luminum is pretty light compared to Xmetal, but the frame surface on Hatchets seems to be not as nice as Xmetals, but maybe that's because i prefer matte surface over shiny ones. other than that, the hatchets are really cool sunglasses. the other thing about hatchet i don't like is the pricetag. at $260, might as well save it up and buy another juliet with a little difference on the price.

I originally went in to buy some glasses for the spring / summer and walked out with a set of A Wire spring 2.0's. After wearing them for 2 hour I found them to tight on my face and went to return them. Got chatting to the lovely salesgirl there and she recommended these for me.

What can I say, I had to get a set ! The one they had in the store were damaged slightly so I bought them from elsewhere in the end. I could never justify the hefty price tag for Oakley sunglasses and usually go for the mid range "branded" fashionable style ones but they just fit feel and look so great I decided to splash out the bit extra and go for them.

The most I've paid for a set of Oakleys. They have a great feel to them--the cool, stiff, heft of metal, but the weight is so much lighter than you would expect for the sculpted frame. Great fit and covers my eye sockets to prevent light coming in.

These are a great middle-of-the-road compromise between the extreme style of the shaped md's, splice, etc, and the conservative look of wires. Because the frame is a single piece they look a bit more conservative than Juliets, but the shape still has a lot of character to it.

A great new addition to the tech-adventuresome Oakley. Like the X-Metals and Magnesium frames, it is just so refreshing to see science and creativity brought out to the mass market. I agree with all the previous raves regarding the strength, weight and wicked look to the new eyewear. The fit was great for me, though I can imagine smaller faces/bridges would want for something more.

Frame: Raw
Lens: Titanium Iridium

Yeah, I know that doesn't exist, but I've tried it. It's a wonderful color combo and I hope it might be made available to the public by Oakley. Before opening, I took a pair of spare replacement Titanium Iridium lenses and put them into the Raw Frame. That's was one of the best combos for the Hatchet I've seen.

I love the weight of the frame, but my face doesn't seem to carry the Hatchet well. It's really more suited for a rounder and definitely more European face. Or at least less Asian.

Again, my usual complaints against spring hinges, but I guess that was a must or else you'd either be dealing with a one piece aluminum pair of sunglasses or three piece with temples that only extended so far. In either case, it would be impractical for mass markets.

I'd like to see a smaller O-luminum, but the Hatchet, like the Romeo, is a first in my book. I just knew Oakley would venture into Al sooner or later.

After two weeks and only a few days of sun I've decided to weigh in on these. I had hoped for a gorgeous saturday that I could use them all day, not in the winter though. The frame is beautifully sculpted, and incredible piece of art. The are extremely light and the slight push in the spring hinge is perfect to adjust the fit around your face. Lens coverage is excellent. They are longer (top to bottom) than the Juliets and sit close enough to not let in any peripheral light. The only problem I do have are the nose pieces. The only came with one size, small. It would have been great to get two sizes as all the X-Metals do. A thicker set for thinner noses would make the fit that much better and push the lens just enough away from my eyes. I do hope we see more O-Luminums int eh future as well.
Noah -
Frame: Pewter (based on price I paid, but looks same as Carbon from what I can tell)
Lens: Ice Iridium, Polarized, RX

The frame is light, hugs my face, very little light gets over the top or around the sides. Even on the rare occaision when light does get around the side (sun behind me and off to the side), there's no reflection of my eyeball, like I get with other glasses I own. It feels like they were made just for me :) Bit of luck, there. The fit and fashion were so good my wife let me go WAY over budget to get them. The nose bridge looks normal, as opposed to pointy on the other oakley frames I tried. My wife really didn't like the pointy nose bridges. The notches in the sides of the frame are perfect for taking the glasses on and off without letting in a ton of light. They must have done that on purpose.

The lenses are wonderful! The polarization cuts out the reflection of the dash on the windshield, as well as the glare off the hood that wrecks forward vision when driving into the sun. The ice iridium lenses do a great job of knocking down the overall brightness without really distorting all the colors like the other lens options. The prescription part is weird at first because of the curvature of the lens and your eye only used to being in focus when looking forward. They say it will take time to get used to and they aren't kidding. Once you adjust, it's wonderful. You get your some of your peripheral vision back, which is ordinarily out of focus with other glasses.

I also note that the hinges seem a bit on the wobbly side in the plane perpendicular to the plane the arms fold on. Particularly when I fold them up, one arm moves over or under the other, rather than staying lined up front to back. I hope I don't have to send them back soon!

These are a great contender for my favourite pair of oakleys.
when it comes to comfort I prefer them to all my X-metals.
I have been desperate for a Titanium Iridium lens for so long but didnt like any of the oakleys that it came with so I was overjoyed when I saw these babies.
Titanium Iridium is now my second favourite lense it looks damn cool when you look through it and when people are looking at you.
I fully recommend these glasses but price wise im sure people are gonna go for the X-Metals if they have a spare 300 bucks so I dont know how well they are gonna sell.
Also I dont know why they dont come with different nose bomb sizes?

I'm very impressed with the latest offering, not only in style but in material. It has the segments like a Plate, but the shape of the Halo. No other model really compares to it, but certain strengths are pulled off of many others. It's strong like an X-Metal, thin like an oversized Wire, and has returned to the aggressive style of some of the Jackets. I'm hoping they keep up the impressive designs in the future instead of heading to the fashion market as some models seem to be doing.

It's not nearly as heavy as the X-Metals, yet doesn't need to make up for the strength by being bulky like the Mags. The lens size is good for larger faces, as people have noted and won't let much light in. The spring hinge works well, but seems to be a weak point in the otherwise solid structure.

OK, so I got tired of waiting for a smaller O-Luminum model to come out. Even though these are on the big side for my face, I figured I would just have to get used to them. The sleek sculpturing of the frame is aggressive without being too outrageous. Although Oakley calls the frame color "brown", it is a metallic paint that looks like a deep bronze, especially in the sun. The Titanium Iridium lenses are wonderful as always, only the left lens has "O-LUMINUM" etched on the lower edge instead of the usual "TITANIUM" to set them apart from other models. Since the frames are on the large side, the lenses offer a significant amount of coverage... very little light leaks through. I'm still hoping that larger nose bombs become available soon. That would make them fit quite a bit better on smaller faces.

I tried these on today, didn't work out for me. I have a small head and face, and the Juliet's and Penny barely sit on my nose cos of how flat it is. The Hatchet however, is larger than the Juliet's, and the nose bombs don't come close to my nose. The style isn't bad, albeit not flashy enough to justify $275 from me, but it's definitely too big for me, which kinda implies that maybe it WAS originally a Romeo prototype. They are much more stylish then the Romeo's however. Here's hoping they come out with smaller versions also :)

If Hatchet is any indication of what's to come, I look forward to seeing more O-Luminums from Oakley. The sculpted aluminum frame is relatively light yet solid and sturdy like the X-Metals. The spring hinge mechanism looks and feels like what is used on the Magnesium line. The glossy finish on the frame looks almost like O-Matter. I also like the tastefully aggressive styling. The only downside for me is that since my face is smaller and my nose is kinda flat, the bottom of the frame sits on my cheeks. I hope Oakley releases a smaller O-Luminum model soon.

Just got a pair of the hatchets today (July 15, 2004) $250.00 @ Occhiali Da Sole (Sunglass store owned by Oakley). The salesman said they are limited edition (I don't believe that though). Anyway, they are pretty sweet! I like Oakley's metals, my last pair being the Juliet X-Metals, and these O-luminum Hatchets are nice. The frame strength rivals that of my Juliet's but the Hatchets are about three time lighter! I really dig the optics too - giving everything around a warm bluish tint. The only complaint I might have about these is that the bridge doesn't quite fit my nose. The do fit - but just a little loose. I liked the fact that my Juliet's had three sizes of nose piece rubber. I didn't get that with the Hatchets (maybe they do come with that, I don't know - my salesman wasn't too bright and I bought the Hatchets off the floor). Anyway - I must say that I really dig these shades so far - we'll see if they stand the test of time! I have been with my Juliet's for almost two years and the Hatchets will have to work hard to win my affection!
